bauhaus-smoked-glass-table-lamp
Bauhaus Geometric Smoked Glass Table Lamp – Black Iron, E27

A half-dome of smoked glass, a black half-shell, a glowing opal disc and a single black sphere: this table lamp is built from simple shapes, arranged like a small piece of modern sculpture. The glass dome softens the light and gives it a warm, smoky tint, the opal disc glows from the inside, and the slim black stem and flat round base keep the whole lamp calm and balanced. It stands 45 cm tall and 30 cm wide, so it makes a strong statement on a sideboard, a console or a bedside table. Choose a warm or white light and a UK plug.

The design style: Bauhaus-inspired
The Bauhaus school, founded in Germany in 1919, believed that good design should be simple, useful and built from basic geometry: circles, half-circles and clean lines. This lamp is Bauhaus-inspired. It is made from just a few pure forms, the half-sphere, the disc and the ball, held together by a thin black stem, with no ornament at all. The smoked glass and black iron give it a modern, graphic look, and it sits comfortably with leather, oak, concrete and plaster, and with the clean lines of mid-century and contemporary furniture.

Why it's worth it
It is a lamp that works as decoration even when it is switched off. The smoked-glass dome and the black iron frame look striking in daylight, and the opal disc spreads a soft, even glow in the evening. A standard E27 LED bulb is included, so you can plug it in and use it straight away, and an E27 fitting means replacement bulbs are easy to find. The knob switch is simple and tactile. The flat round base keeps the lamp stable, and the frame is made of iron, which feels solid and substantial.

Light and atmosphere
The smoked glass shade gives off a soft, warm glow and reduces glare, so the light feels relaxed rather than harsh. Choose Warm Light for a cosy, amber tone that suits living rooms and bedrooms, or White Light for a cleaner, brighter feel on a desk or a study table. The supplier rates the lamp for rooms of about 5 to 10 square metres, which makes it a lovely main accent light for a reading corner or a small lounge. The lamp is not dimmable.

Styling ideas
Place it on a dark wood sideboard with a stack of art books and a ceramic vase for a gallery look. Use it as a bedside lamp on a wide nightstand, where the dome has room to breathe. On a console in a hallway, it makes a bold first impression. Pair it with leather, walnut, linen and soft neutral colours, and let the black frame echo other black details, like picture frames or a chair leg.

For your home
It suits a living room, a bedroom, a study, a hallway console or a sideboard. It makes a thoughtful gift for a design lover or a new home, because it looks like a designer piece out of the box. It is mains powered with a plug, so there is nothing to wire into the wall. A little assembly is needed. For dry indoor use.

For designers and trade
A sculptural table lamp for boutique hotel rooms, restaurants, lounges, reception desks, serviced apartments and show homes. The strong geometric shapes read well from across a room, and the black iron and smoked glass suit modern, industrial and mid-century schemes.
