Each one has a rechargeable LED bulb (2000mAh) that lifts off its base and charges through a USB-C port, so there is no mains wiring and no plug. The bulbs are included, and one remote control works both lights. If they don't light up when they arrive, charge them first.

The design style: classic
Classic lighting is about proportion and comfort: a slim stem, a gently tapered shade and warm, even light. The fabric-shaded wall sconce has graced hallways and bedrooms for generations, because fabric softens the glow and flatters a room. These sconces follow that tradition, with a round brass-finish wall plate and a turned detail on the arm. The rechargeable bulb and remote are the modern touches, hidden behind a timeless shape. They suit traditional, country, hotel-style and contemporary rooms.

Why it's worth it
Hard wired wall lights mean cables, plaster repairs and an electrician. These give you the same look without any of that, so you can fit them in an afternoon and move them whenever you like. They are ideal for rented homes, for rooms with no sockets in the right place, and for anyone who wants a pair of bedside lights without losing the bedside table.

Light, colour and control
The remote switches between warm white, natural white and cool white, with five brightness levels and 15 colours. A timer lets the lights turn themselves off after you fall asleep. Each bulb gives about 300 lumens, which is plenty for ambient light and gentle reading.

For your home
Place one on each side of a bed, frame a mirror or a fireplace, or light a hallway with a pair. Beside a bed, fix them at a comfortable reading height. In a hallway, about 150 to 170cm from the floor works well. The colours are good for children's rooms, parties and teenagers' bedrooms.

For designers and trade
A tidy, wire-free pair for B&Bs, boutique hotel rooms, show homes, restaurants and rental properties.
